Recent Acquisitions

Although COVID-19 put a halt to many things in 2020, we still grew our collection by a few pieces. Mildred Miles donated a hand-woven basket my Jicarilla Apache artist Lydia Pesata, you can see the basket below and read more about this acquisition here

In 2019 through a fellowship, our director Dr. Fumiyasu Arakawa and Professor Atsunori Ito at the National Museum of Ethnology (Minpaku, Japan) collaborated with five Hopi artists to interpret Mimbres iconography on numerous pre-historic bowls from our collection and at the Geronimo Springs Museum collection located in Truth or Consequences, NM. This research and artist commissions resulted in our newest acquisition of fine art pieces by each artist, including Gwen Setalla (ceramicist), Gerald Lomaventema (metalsmith), Ramson Lomatewama (glasssmith), Ed Kabotie (musician and illustrator), and Spencer Nutima (kachina doll carver). The "Living in Sacred Continuum" exhibition featuring their work closed in February of 2020, but these pieces will soon be travelling to the Amerind Museum in Dragoon, Arizona.
