The Amadors were a prominent Mexican-American family who lived in southern New Mexico and northern Chihuahua during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hundreds of objects belonging to that family have been donated to the University Museum over the years, including some that were obtained from their family home in Las Cruces, "El Jardin," before it was destroyed in 1962. The Amador collection includes clothing and textiles, children’s toys and dolls, housewares, and miscellaneous items such as fans.
In addition to our museum's collection of objects relating to the Amador family, the NMSU Library Archives and Special Collections maintains a large collection of their paper records, including thousands of letters, photographs, catalogs, and other documents. Many of these documents are being digitized as part of the Amador Family Correspondence Project. The Amador Hotel still stands near the entrance to downtown Las Cruces, and the Amador Hotel Foundation is working to preserve and restore that building.
