This bowl was recovered from the Berrenda Creek site by NMSU field school students in 1976. People in the Southwest and Mesoamerica included water bird motifs like this crane in much of their artwork. These birds represent water and the ability to move through all three worlds-the Underworld, Middleworld, and Upperworld-which is why prehistoric people ascribed them with cultural and religious importance.
