Reserve Indented Corrugated Jar

Many Southwest potters made their vessels out of coils of clay. They usually smoothed these coils to give their pottery an even surface. Vessels like this one, however, are not smoothed on the exterior, and the potter used their thumb to make the indentations all the way around each coil. This corrugated exterior makes the pot easier to hold because it’s less slippery, and it makes the jar conduct heat better when used for cooking. To create the Reserve Indented Corrugated style, Mogollon potters would polish over the high points.
