Yucca Paintbrush 1976.14.97
Octavius Seowtewa: So, if you look at the back it doesn’t have any paint on it. If you look at the front, it’s got black paint. It’s not broken, it’s not part of a basket, nobody was starting a basket. It was actually a paint brush. Because of the color. The way it’s shaped, it’s to paint the inside of the bowl. There’s two bundles that somebody weaved the top to make the brush. So, it wasn’t a start of a basket, or it wasn’t a broken piece from a basket, it’s just it’s complete, and it’s a brush. You can see the color is black, it’s a coal deposit. It’s a really fine coal deposit they grind down to make black paint. So, Presley (Haskie) was saying that the way it’s shaped might have been used to paint the inside of the pot.
